Adkins was raised by a single young mother in different working-class areas of London. Adkins enjoyed listening to contemporary pop music as a child and was learning to play the clarinet as well as the guitar. It wasn't until her teens when she was introduced to Etta James, a blues and rhythm singerand other musicians from the early 20th century and she began to consider about a career in the field of music. As she learned in a secondary school for performing arts, which was funded by the government and a friend began posting songs Adkins had composed on Myspace. Her music eventually caught the attention of record labels, and in 2006, several months after graduating the school, she signed a contract with XL Recordings.
